Since the hubbs’ birthday was on a public holiday this year, I decided it was too rare and good to NOT throw a party for him. I asked BANG to be part of this surprise and decided to just keep it very low-key. In fact, it was so low-key that I forgot I was planning a party and accidentally let slip a few strange comments. For example, he was looking at the mini cornettos in the freezer and I said, “dont eat that. Save that for…” then I caught myself. “Save that for?” I had meant to say “H, JJ and E” but I quickly moved on hehe. The only real prep I did was to stock up on beer and a salad which I hid in the veggie compartment since he never opens that.
24th Sept finally arrived and at 9am, the doorbell rang. I decided to pre-order all the food the day before so that I can take it easy on the actual day and also work it as part of my birthday theme of “Favourites”. Macs is one of his fave breakfasts so that’s what we started off with. He was happy and surprised and we had a chillax morning looking at the haze outside our window as we ate.
Ethan took a nap about 10.30am and at 12noon, the doorbell rang again! Pizza Hut had arrived too early, much to my chargin! They were meant to come at 12.30pm after our friends had arrived at 12noon. Good thing the hubbs didn’t venture out of his bedroom though I was sure he was wondering what it was about. I quickly hid a box of pizza in the kitchen, secretly started airfrying the seaweed chicken and placed the remaining 2 boxes of pizza on the table and told him “that’s the lunch I ordered, your second favourite. But we eat when Ethan is awake”. And prayed that Ethan wouldnt wake up just yet.
About 12.15pm, the gang had arrived downstairs so I quietly slipped downstairs to let them up. Even with 2 babies, somehow they managed to enter quite quietly and broke into song as they marched towards our bedroom. All fears that he would be shirtless were allayed as the birthday boy came out, surprised and smiling. Of course, Ethan awoke from the commotion but it was lunchtime anyway!
Really touched that our friends took precious time off on this (extremely) HAZY public holiday to come celebrate with us, and brought over a handmade banner plus balloons which the kids loved. I’m really grateful for the sanctuary of a home that we have, esp post-kids, where it’s so much easier to have everyone over rather than stress about finding a place outside. (Meals with Ethan outside is becoming an epic feat and it has been rather stressful and unpleasant of late but I will go into that another time)
So after a stack of pizza, seaweed chicken and nuggets, Shawn arrived with his delicious chocolate cake. I have missed this cake for a long time cause he was previously unable to deliver but now that he is able to, I was more than happy to order it. The hubbs loves this cake too and it was a sweet end to a sweet day.
I asked the hubbs what was his greatest joy at this grand age of 31 and he said it was being a father; that it had changed him and matured him in a way that he had not expected, and he loved being one. So I guess it was quite apt that Est’s handmade banner had a mother & child pic embedded on his heart. I am grateful for this man who has loved us so unconditionally and who has so sacrificially given me the car to use for most of the week so that Ethan and I can travel in comfort and ease while he takes the (lately unreliable) bus and train everywhere. Looking to many more good years together!
